HOMG.
Okay, so I liked "Sunday" fine as an episode about what SGA did on their day off and exploding tumours and all that. As a fluff/DotW ep it was great. But I never felt it was a good send-off for Carson Beckett. It felt like Carson's death was sort of shoved into an episode that had already been planned, that it was somehow shaped and distorted to FIT into this other episode entirely, and just ... it came off as a little contrived, and artificial, and I just always thought that Carson deserved MUCH better of a send-off. The retcon about him being Rodney's best friend, his cheerfully going around Atlantis asking people to go fishing with him, he might as well have said "I'm retiring tomorrow with a really big pension, and me and my wife are going to sail around the world in our boat the L-4-Ever."
But this? THIS was how it should have been done the first time, this was the final episode that Carson deserved. OMG. He was brave, and *conflicted*, and he had *real emotions* and he had significant, meaningful interactions with the other characters, and he tried. He really, really tried. And he was brave and tragic and just - God. It was all spot on. And the acting from EVERYONE in that final scene was just great.
John, doing his stoic-John thing. And then as soon as Carson moves away his face sort of falls, and he's biting his lip and he's swallowing, and he's looking up and away and just ... God. JOHHHN.
And Ronon. Ronon broke my heart ("big man" eep) when he said "this is exactly what I was afraid would happen", because he'd BEEN there with Elizabeth. Elizabeth was as good as dead and then she was suddenly alive again. Then she came back, but she was a clone and then she was dead again. And Ronon didn't want that to happen with Carson again, so he was trying to stay distant but he couldn't! Because he's Ronon and out of ALL of them he's probably the most emotionally intelligent.
And Rodney. OMG. I can hardly imagine. I bet Rodney wanted so bad to get that chance to be Carson's friend again, to make up for lost chances, to make it up to CARSON. And he just couldn't deal and he was ready to break at any moment, and just ... gah.
OH SHOW.
AND TEYLA. OMFG TEYLA. I just - aljslkjsdldf. That's like a WHOLE OTHER SEPARATE INCOHERENT ENTRY. Because she has been through so much SHIT and she must have been so fucking terrified but she still manages to stay calm, and she tries to talk and rationalize and omg THAT NEEDLE FULL OF STUFF SHE DOES NOT KNOW GOING INTO HER BABY AND HOW IS SHE NOT JUST BATSHIT INSANE RIGHT NOW? That was seriously disturbing, seriously crazy stuff. I hope Michael gets his ass drop kicked into the nearest sun because I can not imagine anything that could have been more terrifying for her.
Shallow notes:
Paul looked great this episode, he's gotten thinner - and tan! Hehe.
Joe's little Flanbites. That one Flanbite SMILING UP AT HIM as his daddy ran away to save people. He must be all 'MY DAD IS SO MUCH COOLER THAN ANY OTHER DAD EVER'.
Gah.
Just ... gah.
That was so what I wanted out of Carson's exit from the show. That's what I've always wanted. Can't ask for anything more.
ETA: And John helped Carson with his SHOULDER STRAP. Oh John <3
