First off, I loved certain parts of this episode, I really really did, and some parts ... not so much :p
Thoughts/spoilers behind the cut; no Keller love. So .... yeah, Keller fans might want to move on lol
Okay, so, The Good:
- All things Rodney and John. I tend to lean more toward the Ronon/John side of the fence, but man, did I love Rodney and John here. And I'm not even talking about slashiness, I didn't really get that vibe. It was all about their friendship, their bond, how EVERYONE looks to John first to help them/save them, and how deeply John feels that. He knows he's the guy, and he wants to protect them all so much. His refusal to say goodbye to Rodney on the pier was so totally in-character, I adored it. It's interesting that we always get the best John moments in Rodney episodes.
- Ronon was fantastic in this episode as well. I love how he comforted Jeannie, and we even got backstory! For RONON! Outside of his designated One Ep of the Season. The wig, however, has gotten progressively worse -_-
- Woolsey! I love Woolsey. I love Robert Picardo. It is really a shame that we're not going to see this character grow/develop in another season because he has such great potential. Or hell, that the writers aren't giving him a FIFTH of the attention they give Keller.
- David Hewlett knocked it out of the park with his actng, but that was pretty much going to be a given ;) There was a lot of time jumping in this episode between the video logs, flashbacks, and what was going on in 'real' time, but I thought the map of McKay's degeneration was done well. His scene with Sheppard and Jeannie were wonderful.
The Bad/The Ugly:
- Rodney telling Keller he loves her. Okay. So - I can see that. Keller's 'cute', she gives him attention, there's BANTER, and they went out to drinks. Maybe there was a whole bunch of other interaction between them we're just supposed to assume happened (like we were expected to assume with Katie Brown), that made Rodney get to that point. But even if there really wasn't, I can see Rodney falling in love with her. But I don't believe for one damn minute that Keller would have been as protective/gung-ho as she was if he HADN'T said it. She was completely selfish and self-righteous in this episode and it made me want to stab her in the FACE.
- Yeah, so Keller. I'm sorry - I don't like her. And no matter how much the writers try to shove her down my throat with "look how SMART she is!", "look how SASSY she is!", "look HOW MUCH SHE KNOWS RODNEY!", "look at her tragic non-Prom going past!", "Rodney loves her! RONON loves her! Don't YOU LOVE HER?!" bullcrap, I'm just going to gag her back out.
- I think they made the team AND Rodney horribly OOC in parts just so they could make Keller seem smarter and 'right'. I don't buy for one damn second that Rodney wouldn't want an extra day of coherency to try and help/fix himself. There is NO way that he would view that as 'torture'. ESPECIALLY WHEN THERE IS A MYSTICAL SHRINE OF HEAL-NESS RIGHT THERE! McKay would be like "OKAY, let's open this bitch up and FIX ME!" - not "bboo hiss you brought me back!"; sorry - but fail. I think the writers warped him to make Keller 'right' to show how Meant to Be they are.
- I also don't think Sheppard, Ronon, OR Teyla would bring Rodney to this place, see him get better, than whip out the plastic flatware and have a picnic and just let him die in 24 hours. I know eventually they all got off their asses, but come on. This whole 'keller's the only one that didn't give up on him' is such crap I can't believe they expect us to accept that.
- And how many times has the old cermoneal/religious/cultural artificat of wonder turned out to be Ancient? Have none of them noticed this pattern yet? How is it that when Ronon brought this up not ONE of them said 'oh hey, is it Ancient?'
In conclusion, I liked certain PARTS of this episode a whole lot, but overall there was a lot of OOC stuff that just rubbed me the wrong way. There was just a weird sort of awkward/foreign feeling to it, like after four years and change I was going 'who the hell are these people?' a lot of the time.
Also: shut up, Keller.

Date: 2008-08-25 02:14 am (UTC)Like you, I loved parts of the episode, but it would've been so much better if I didn't have to have Keller in so many scenes to ruin them.
On the plus side, I adored the John and Rodney parts and how Ronon worked so hard to figure out something for his friend.

Date: 2008-08-25 04:05 am (UTC)I mean, I'd be okay with her as a background character, and she and Ronon have interesting chemistry going on, but the whole thing with McKay felt forced- Carson and McKay had far better chemistry just as friends/co-workers.
